Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds Book Review

Last updated on November 10, 2020

Long Way Down is a young adult novel by Jason Reynolds.

I hate this book.

And I love this book.

The book is written in prose, hard hitting, powerful prose that tells the story of Will and a long line of men and one woman from his (neighbor)hood. As Will embarks on a journey to follow rule 3: revenge, he encounters several ghosts who challenge his understanding of the rules and of life. It becomes clear that he understands less than he thinks he does, that he doesn’t know the full stories of the things he’s always known.

Will’s journey is quick. He leaves home with a gun in the waistband of his pants, sure or what comes next. But as the elevator goes down 7 floors, both his physical and mental discomfort grows. What choice will he make when he gets to the bottom?

Final Verdict on Long Way Down

I said I hate this book and that’s because it’s not neat. You have to go on the journey with Will. You can’t just sit back as a spectator. This is your decision too. What can you learn for your own life?

I love this book because it is beautifully written. It is both emotionally and mentally engaging. I give Long Way Down five stars. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
