Sister of My Heart is a novel but Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni. Born within hours of each other, Anju and Sudha are sisters of the heart, whose destinies are entwined.

Anju and Sudha grew up in the same household, parented by not just their biological mother but by all three women in the household. Although the girls have different fortunes, they grow up like sisters and are inseparable until their marriage.

How do you measure love against love? Do you choose a husband, child or sister first? These questions combine with family secrets to create cracks in the relationship between Anju and Sudha, as girls and again as women. Yet, even as they change in reaction to both challenges and opportunities, their love for each other persists.

Sister of My Heart explores love and family, identity, cultural expectation and traditions. There is a mystical element with the invocation of Hindu Gods and traditions. How much of the girls’ lives were written invisibly on their foreheads from the time they were a baby, how much is due to karma for their parents’ choices, what portion is due to the wishes Sudha made? Was their life journey decided by destiny or was it their own doing?

Final Verdict of Sister of My Heart

I loved Sister of My Heart. It is interesting to me how the girls’ characters developed over time, how much of their girlhood they carried and how much got changed by their circumstances. I enjoyed seeing the evolution of the older women as well, the mothers.

The surprise in the ending was a bit predictable but I liked it anyway. Plus, I’m left wanting more of the story. I am invested in the characters and was thrilled to discover that there is a sequel!

I give this book 5 stars. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
