Pride book cover, by Ibi Zoboi

A self-proclaimed Pride and Prejudice remix, Pride is a young adult love story by Ibi Zaboi. The story is from the perspective of Zuri Benitez, a seventeen years old Haitian-Dominican American. She lives with her four sisters and her parents in a 2 bedroom apartment in present-day Brooklyn.

After standing abandoned for years, the house opposite Zuri’s building is reconstructed into a mini mansion. Once the renovation is complete, the Darcys move in while the Benitez family watch out their windows.

The Darcys are a rich Black family with two sons, Ainsley and Darcy. Ainsley

is the same age as Janae, the oldest Benitez daughter, while Zuri and Darius are the same age.

The Benitez household is a hub of activity on the block, and Mrs Benitez is famous for her cooking. Even in socializing, the two families couldn’t be more different with the Darcys taking a catered approach to their social events. As the neighbourhood changes, what will become of the Benitez family? Will the Darcy boys and Benitez girls find love?

Final Verdict for Pride

This book is easy to read. It explores issues of class within race, touching on economic inequalities and religious traditions. I give it 4 stars. ⭐⭐⭐⭐
