The Slow Down of Life

Last updated on April 20, 2020

I was born in the Caribbean where the weather is consistently hot. On average, the minimum temperature is about 23 degrees Celsius (73 degrees Fahrenheit). Perhaps that accounts for the slow pace of life. As a child growing up in the small community of Mon Repos, I was known for walking quickly. People would often tell me to slow down, or comment to each other on how fast I was walking. (If you’ve never lived in a small community, you may not know the wonders of people watching as a pastime.)

I don’t walk as quickly as I used to and I wonder if that’s a sign of accelerated aging. When my sister (who’s over 20 years my junior) and I are going out and in a hurry, I feel like I have to walk at a slow jog to keep up with her! She (kindly) insists that she doesn’t notice but I don’t know how she can miss my accelerated breathing. All this has prompted me to start 5K Runner for the second time!

There’s definitely room for slow in my life, in particular slow weekend mornings where I laze in bed reading a book for hours. I also like to eat slowly, taking time to chew and savor. But in general, my preference is to do things as quickly as possible. The challenge is to make sure to do them efficiently and effectively. Otherwise any speed advantages are lost in having to fix and redo. Yet, in fixing mistakes, there is often space for growth and learning.

During April, I’m participating in the writing prompts challenge from WordPress.com. Want to participate? Find the prompts here.
