Craziness of Marrakesh

Last updated on January 6, 2011

The fact that we caught the wrong train and had to get off at Casablanca to catch the correct one should have warned us. Or maybe the email from our hotel explaining a problem with our room and their transfer of our reservation to a nearby riad should have concerned us. But no, we went trustingly into the madness of Marrakesh.

When you think of the magic and mystery of Morocco, you probably imagine Marrakesh with its snake charmers, storytellers, performers, entertainment, blatancy and brashness.

We stayed in a cramped room in a poorly kept riad in the medina close to Place Jemaa el Fna. We’d originally made a reservation at a pretty riad recommended by Alistair’s special places. However that hotel had double booked the room and suggested Chez Tariq instead. I won’t dwell on Chez Tariq but the experience there was not worth the price and I would not recommend it to anyone.

Since we’d seen madressas, a tannery and other such sights in Fez, we skipped those in Marrakesh and focused on shopping. We also took a one hour city tour by horse and carriage, ate local food in the square and enjoyed fantastic ice cream.

I enjoyed spending a couple of days in the magic and wildness of Marrakesh but I’m not itching to revisit it.
