Stopover in Germany – Heidelberg

I left Khartoum on May 27, 2008 on Lufthansa. I always like to take the opportunity for a stopover when possible so … I stopped in Germany with Melanie. We took the morning bus from Frankfurt to Heidelberg, a university town about an hour from Frankfurt.

Heidelberg is a nice town. On the first day, we walked along Hauptstrasse, exploring its crooks and crannies before going for a stroll along Philosophweg. The highlight of

Heidelberg is the castle, which can be seen from many parts of the city. You can walk up to the castle or take a funicular up. We elected to take the funicular up as it was free with our Heidelberg card. Much of the castle was destroyed during the wars and by fire but there are some restored sections, and beautiful gardens, as well as a wine cellar museum. The one day Heidelberg card granted us free entry into the castle grounds and the apothecary and wine cellar museums but we had to pay for a compulsory guided tour of the restored part of the castle. The two day Heidelberg card would have allowed a free entry into the castle and would only have cost 4 euros more each, with additional discounts allowed. From the castle, we went to Konisberg for views of Heidelberg. We walked around for a while, but did not find the storybook amusement park and falconerie appealing.

From the castle, we went for lunch and then to the Kurpfalzisches Museum. The museum was quite large; we explored all the sections but were quite tired from our day. We did have a nice ending to the tour though. I had Movenpick ice cream in the garden, followed by free coffee in the museum café.
