New Years 2011 in Seville

Last updated on January 8, 2011

Melanie and I flew from Marrakesh to Seville on Dec 31. We did part of Frommers walking tour of Seville. Unfortunately, we just missed the open period for the cathedral and archives because of reduced hours for new years eve. We spent a few hours exploring the streets and taking pictures of the multitude of churches on our route. The tangerine trees along the streets are beautiful with the great contrast between the orange fruit and green leaves. They added to the festive spirit. Melanie and I wondered if it was okay to pick the fruit and whether they tasted good. We saw a lady picking them at one point so each picked one. I took one bite; I’ve never had a more sour fruit!

We went back to our hotel in the late afternoon with the intention of taking a rest; I ended up calling my grandmother and watching the highlights of 2010 on CNN and BBC instead. Around 10 p.m. we headed out and ended up waiting about 55 minutes for the bus. We got to Plaza Neuva after 11 and gathered with the crowds waiting to celebrate the new year. There was only one store open in the vicinity so we were lucky to have brought our grapes. As the clock stuck midnight, Mel and I quickly ate our grapes. It was difficult to eat them all before the clock stopped chiming but I managed so I started off the year right. All around us, people were popping champagne and setting off fireworks. We headed off for our hotel shortly after midnight to make the 1 am bus. We ended up going in the wrong direction for about 20 minutes (my sense of direction has always been bad) but we figured it out in time to head back and make the bus with a few minutes to spare!
