For the last two days, Melanie and I have been exploring Frankfurt. By exploring, I mostly mean that we’ve been walking around the old city taking in the sights and people watching. Frankfurt is museum city, with a large number of museums. We only went to the Goethe House and Museum though. We considered going to some of the others but never made it. Instead, we went to the zoo as I’d never been to a zoo before…
This morning, I woke up early and took a taxi to the airport with Melanie. Her flight was around 8:00 a.m. I left my luggage in storage and took the train to visit the Baha’i House of Worship in Langenhain-Hofheim. I arrived there around 8:30, when the temple is completely isolated. I took time to walk around the gardens, enjoying the views, before entering the House of Worship to prayer and meditate. The location is very peaceful. At the time that I was there, no sound disturbed the morning. The singing of the birds contributed to the atmosphere of peace and tranquility. From the House of Worship, I visited the bookstore and purchased some prayer books. The husband and wife who work in the bookstore was very welcoming; the husband brought me tea and shared scenes from Building Momentum with me. His wife translated the portions that were not in English. It was a beautiful experience.
I left Khartoum on May 27, 2008 on Lufthansa. I always like to take the opportunity for a stopover when possible so … I stopped in Germany with Melanie. We took the morning bus from Frankfurt to Heidelberg, a university town about an hour from Frankfurt.
Heidelberg is a nice town. On the first day, we walked along Hauptstrasse, exploring its crooks and crannies before going for a stroll along Philosophweg. The highlight of
From the castle, we went for lunch and then to the Kurpfalzisches Museum. The museum was quite large; we explored all the sections but were quite tired from our day. We did have a nice ending to the tour though. I had Movenpick ice cream in the garden, followed by free coffee in the museum café.
I know that you’ve probably seen Khartoum in the news. Yes, there have been some trouble in and around Omdurman. I’ve seen increased military presence in Khartoum as a result. However, I have not felt directly threatened at any time. Basically, my colleagues and I have been keeping a low profile. The school was closed yesterday. It dismissed early today and there’s no school tomorrow. The school is in contact with organizations here and is determining the best course of action on a day by day basis. I’ll post any changes here, as they occur.
